I am a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have grown to appreciate more and more the guidance my faith has given me personally, allowing me to avoid the difficulties that can come from unwise choices while, at the same time, marking those paths that lead to lasting joy and happiness. I have also obtained a deep conviction of the elegant truths my faith has taught me concerning the purposes of this life, our existence prior to birth, expectations after death, and the central role that families play in this eternal progression.

Academically, my interests center in ancient religions.  I obtained a BA and MA in Biblical Hebrew from BYU and UC-Berkeley respectively and a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania.  I currently serve full-time as the director of the LDS Seminaries and Institutes of Religion in the Boston/Cambridge area. The LDS Seminaries and Institutes of Religion was created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help serve and strengthen students attending colleges or universities throughout the world. Our local office serves the students at Harvard, the Harvard Graduate Schools, as well as students and non-students attending other local universities/colleges or working in the Boston/Cambridge area. The main focus of the LDS Seminaries and Institutes of Religion is to provide regular weekly religious classes, but we also host social gatherings, service projects, and interfaith events. The religious instruction includes curriculum-based classes that focus on various religious texts in our faith tradition (the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, and others) as well as LDS Church history, Christian history, world religions, and more practical instruction concerning family life and productive living. These classes are open to anyone, member or non-member, who would like to attend.
I am very glad and excited to be a part of the Harvard community and to work with my fellow chaplains to help provide a positive social, spiritual, and service-centered climate for students as they pursue their academic goals.
